About

How can robust, circular eco-materials be designed from various mineral-based waste streams, making them complementary and stabilizing the pollutants they contain?

Several Walloon companies are facing challenges in managing their waste. It turns out that combining certain types of waste leads to the formation of a specific hydraulic phase, which can serve as a binder in the synthesis of low-load-bearing materials such as re-excavatable self-compacting materials (MAR) or sub-base materials (MSF).

Moreover, this synthesized phase helps stabilize the inorganic pollutants present in the waste and captures large quantities of water molecules, thus contributing to the stiffening of the material.

The WASTES2MAT project aims to develop these eco-materials whose load-bearing capacity comes from this specific phase. The project’s originality is further enhanced by the fact that all the reagents used to synthesize this phase are secondary in origin, thus preventing their disposal in technical landfill centers.
