Ensival School

Project

Following the 2021 floods, the reconstruction of Ensival School combines climate resilience with circular construction principles. Facade bricks, tiles, thresholds and stone foundations from the former school are reused in the new project. Designed to adapt to future flooding, the building also integrates low-carbon energy systems and promotes biodiversity.

About

The Ensival School project involves the demolition and reconstruction of a school severely damaged during the 2021 floods in the Vesdre Valley. Located close to the river, the new school is designed to address future flood risks while providing a high-quality and sustainable learning environment.

The project embraces circular construction principles through the reuse of materials salvaged from the former school. Facade bricks are incorporated into the new building, original ceramic tiles are repurposed as interior wall cladding, and thresholds and stone foundations are reused as landscape elements, forming borders and seating terraces within the playground. The architectural design also focuses on climate adaptation. Learning spaces and technical equipment are located above flood levels, while the most flood-tolerant functions occupy the lower levels. Materials selected for vulnerable areas are chosen for their ability to retain their performance after exposure to water.

From an energy perspective, the project relies on a heat pump, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and supporting the building's decarbonisation. Outdoor spaces are designed as an extension of the riverside landscape, encouraging biodiversity and strengthening children's connection with nature.

The reconstruction of Ensival School demonstrates how a major climate event can become an opportunity to create a public facility that combines resilience, circularity and environmental ambition.
