The great complexity of plastics

Wim Grymonprez, from Centexbel-VKC, examines the complexity of plastics and their implications for circularity.

Plastics, made up of hundreds of polymers and various additives, present a complexity that influences their recyclability and performance. Compositions vary to meet specific requirements, such as fire resistance. PET, for example, is suitable for holding carbonated beverages, unlike polypropylene (polypro), which allows CO2 to pass through. Polymer applications also differ, with polypro used in extrusion, injection and concrete. Regulations limit the use of recycled materials in the food sector, but innovations are aimed at increasing the use of recycled materials.
