The document maps the potential for energy storage by pumped storage in the Walloon Region, identifying sites suitable for the installation of above-ground STEPs. It takes into account exclusion constraints such as Natura 2000 areas, nature reserves, urban areas and various regulatory allocations. The study is divided into three phases:
firstly, identification of the conditions necessary for the siting of WWTPs; secondly, mapping of the areas that could potentially accommodate these infrastructures; and thirdly, technical and economic characterisation of the main sites selected.
The report includes a detailed methodology, profitability criteria and mapping results, while also proposing recommendations for the future deployment of these energy storage technologies in Wallonia.
