LOOP : Life Out Of Plastic

LOOP (Life Out Of Plastic) is a series of 12 videos focusing on the dangers of plastic production and recycling. It invites us to reinvent the way we produce, transform and consume plastic.

Life out of Plastic is a project aimed at raising awareness and providing information on the plastic industry in Belgium and Wallonia, as part of the Walloon Waste Resources Plan and the Circular Wallonia strategy. The project provides detailed information about the actors in the plastic sector, their roles, and the challenges they face. In response to the lack of understanding of the environmental impacts of plastic, the project explores key questions such as how and why plastic pollutes, and whether alternatives are truly better. The project also highlights single-use plastics, especially packaging and utensils, which make up the majority of household plastic waste, while addressing often invisible sectors such as construction and electronics. By breaking down the different types of plastics and their applications, Life out of Plastic helps citizens better understand this ubiquitous material and its environmental effects, including information on biodegradable and oxodegradable plastics.

Did you know that Belgium produces 7.3 million tons of plastic and processes 2.4 million tons annually, with about ten producers based in Wallonia? Plastic production is increasing exponentially, and although it is often made from fossil materials, the extraction and production processes are the most polluting stages. In Belgium, packaging represents the largest share of processed plastics (1,080kt), but much of this plastic is used only once, thrown away after just 20 minutes of use. Recycling alone is not a solution, as many types of plastics cannot be recycled. In Belgium, only 39% of plastic waste is recycled.

It is therefore high time to reinvent how we produce, transform, and consume plastic. To do so, LOOP (Life Out Of Plastic) offers a series of 12 videos covering crucial topics such as:
