Waste2Bio
Waste2Bio is a Walloon initiative aiming to reclaim industrial brownfields through phytomanagement solutions, promoting biodiversity and sustainable biomass utilization.
About
Waste2Bio is an initiative by the Walloon Region, coordinated by the University of Liège, aiming to reclaim industrial brownfields in Wallonia through phytomanagement solutions. The goal is to establish, by 2027, an operational platform deploying innovative solutions to restore value to brownfields, either temporarily or permanently.
Main areas of work:
Mapping and characterizing sites suitable for phytomanagement.
Developing original crops based on species assemblages to promote biodiversity and improve soil and water quality.
Developing biomass exploitation sectors for energy production, biomaterials, or high-value-added molecules.
Strengthening training sectors for new methods of biomass production and exploitation.
Assessing societal impacts in terms of acceptability and well-being
The initiative relies on a consortium of over 80 partners, including public, private, academic, and associative actors.
