Shift modal ASBL

Stakeholder

Shiftmodal ASBL promotes sustainable and socially fair mobility by offering alternatives to private cars. It raises awareness through conferences, studies, and school workshops while developing lightweight, eco-friendly shared vehicles.

About

Shiftmodal ASBL is an association founded in October 2022, dedicated to promoting sustainable and socially fair mobility. Its goal is to provide concrete alternatives to private car ownership while raising awareness among various audiences about the environmental and societal impacts of motorized transport.

Shiftmodal operates through several key initiatives:

    • Conferences & studies: targeted at adults, policymakers, and professionals, these sessions foster discussions on current mobility challenges and explore innovative solutions.

    • School workshops: children are educated on the pros and cons of different modes of transport, with a focus on road safety and alternative mobility options.

    • Advocacy & projects: the association campaigns for increased public transport funding and develops innovative cooperative mobility solutions, particularly through the

      Shifti

      project.

One of Shiftmodal’s flagship projects is the development of shared intermediate vehicles. These vehicles, powered by a combination of human effort and electric motors, are designed as efficient and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional cars, complementing public transportation. This initiative aligns with the Mobility as a Service (MaaS) approach, which prioritizes transport usage over private vehicle ownership.

The ASBL is also actively involved in combating "SUVisation", a trend where personal vehicles are becoming larger and more energy-consuming. By promoting compact, energy-efficient mobility solutions, Shiftmodal seeks to address planetary limits while ensuring fair access to mobility for all.

The organization is driven by a multidisciplinary team, bringing together experts in mobility, vehicle design, engineering, and educational outreach. Its founder, Michaël Horevoets, is a mobility consultant and long-time advocate in the sector, while Philippe Gilson, an aerospace engineer by training, contributes his expertise in social economy and renewable energy.

Through its commitment to research, awareness-raising, and innovation, Shiftmodal ASBL aims to fundamentally transform mobility habits and support the transition toward a more environmentally responsible and socially inclusive transport system.
