EXTRAHEMPWAL - An Extractable Hemp Value Chain in Wallonia

Published on 30 September 2023

Publication

The EXTRAHEMPWAL study investigates the valorization of long-fiber textile hemp tops in Wallonia. Conducted by Valbiom with support from the Walloon Recovery Plan, it examines optimal cultivation, extraction, and utilization conditions for active molecules (cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids) in cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and biocontrol applications.

The EXTRAHEMPWAL project, led by Valbiom as part of the Walloon Recovery Plan, aims to structure a hemp extraction value chain by utilizing long-fiber textile hemp tops. Conducted between May 2022 and September 2023, this initiative promotes a co-valorization approach to maximize plant utilization while optimizing harvest and processing techniques.

    Key Research Areas and Findings

    1. Valorization of Active Hemp Compounds

The study identified three key active compound families in hemp tops:

    • Cannabinoids (CBD, CBG) – Recognized for their anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and relaxing properties.

    • Terpenes – Aromatic compounds with potential applications in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

    • Flavonoids – Antioxidant molecules that support cell protection and well-being.

    2. Extraction and Processing of Hemp Tops

The study tested several extraction methods, with hydroalcoholic ethanol extraction (70%) proving the most effective. Key findings include:

    • Optimized extraction with an average enrichment factor of 5 to 6.

    • Ideal drying temperature at 40°C to preserve active compounds.

    3. Applications and Economic Potential

Three major industries could benefit from these hemp extracts:

    • Cosmetics: formulations enriched with CBD and flavonoids.

    • Pharmaceuticals: potential anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects.

    • Biocontrol: preliminary tests show promising results against Phytophthora infestans (late blight).

Additionally, the study highlighted that cannabinoid and flavonoid concentrations are higher 10 days before flowering than at full bloom.

    Future Developments

Following this study, the Extrawal project has been launched to scale up industrial extraction and further evaluate biocontrol applications.
