Commissioned by the Walloon Government and conducted by the Digital Agency, this study examines the environmental and climate impacts of digital tools and provides strategic recommendations for a more sustainable digital future. It highlights the opportunities of digitalization for ecological transition, the environmental risks involved, and the actions to be implemented in Wallonia.

In response to the challenges of the ecological and digital transition, the Digital Agency conducted an in-depth study on the environmental impact of digital tools. Commissioned by the Walloon Government, this study assesses the risks and opportunities of digitalization and provides strategic recommendations for a more sustainable approach.

    Key Findings of the Study:

    • A Significant Environmental Impact

      • The digital sector accounts for 2 to 4% of global CO2 emissions, projected to reach 8% by 2030.

      • The EU consumes 5,800 tons of rare resources annually and generates 115 million tons of e-waste.

      • Planned obsolescence and the accumulation of electronic waste remain major issues.

    • Digitalization as a Tool for Ecological Transition

      • Smart grids reduce energy consumption by 10%.

      • Industry 4.0 optimizes supply chains and could cut 240 million tons of CO2.

      • Smart mobility solutions lower traffic congestion, saving 650 million tons of CO2.

    • Beware of the Rebound Effects

      • Increased energy efficiency often leads to higher consumption.

      • Remote working reduces travel but encourages more digital equipment purchases.

    Recommendations for Wallonia:

    • Modernize industrial production to create a more eco-friendly digital industry.

    • Promote digital sobriety (reducing unnecessary digital usage, extending device lifespan).

    • Enhance resource circularity by supporting

      reuse, recycling, and repair industries.

    • Invest in Green IT innovations to develop sustainable technologies.

This study highlights that digitalization can either accelerate or hinder the ecological transition, depending on its use. By adopting more circular and sustainable models, Wallonia can become a leader in responsible digitalization.
