About
Founded in 2007 by the City of Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve and the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), the Maison du Développement Durable (MDD) serves as a hub for local ecological and social transition initiatives. It acts as a catalyst for projects, fostering collaboration among citizens, associations, businesses, and public institutions to create a more sustainable territory.
MDD’s key missions include:
Bringing together local stakeholders engaged in the transition and supporting them in developing tangible projects.
Raising public awareness through events, conferences, workshops, and educational programs.
Experimenting with sustainable solutions and showcasing exemplary ecological and social practices.
Providing resources via the Recueil de la Transition, a directory of local initiatives, and the Carte de la Transition, which maps active projects.
MDD’s Focus Areas
Circular Economy & Zero Waste The MDD promotes waste reduction based on the 5R principle: Recover, Repair, Regenerate, Recycle, and Reduce consumption.
Hosting a weekly Repair Café to extend product lifespans.
Engaging in the Sharepair project, an initiative enhancing citizens’ ability to repair electronic devices.
Organizing zero-waste workshops to encourage sustainable alternatives to overconsumption.
Biodiversity In response to biodiversity loss, the MDD works to protect wild pollinators and maintain local ecosystems.
Hosting educational sessions on native plants, every first Wednesday from April to October.
Running edible plant tasting workshops every first Thursday of the month.
Raising awareness about local species and biodiversity-friendly practices.
Climate, Energy & Mobility The MDD educates communities on climate and energy issues using interactive tools.
Organizing Climate Frescoes and "2 Tonnes" workshops to highlight individual CO₂ emissions.
Promoting sustainable mobility in partnership with the City of Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve through concrete actions to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Food Autonomy & Sustainable Agriculture The MDD advocates for a local, ecological, and resilient food system, emphasizing:
Short supply chains and local producers to minimize transport impact.
Seasonal and organic products to preserve soil quality and consumer health.
Food waste reduction efforts, promoting good practices and reducing packaging.
Collaboration with UCLouvain and the City of OLLN, integrating local transition policies.
A participatory commitment Guided by its principle, "Ecology for all, by all", the MDD ensures broad community inclusion and co-develops solutions with local residents and stakeholders.
