Visit to a textile hemp plot

Hemp is increasingly in the news! And with good reason... This plant has the potential to become a local source of environmentally-friendly fibers! As part of the Interreg NWE Hemp4Circularity project and the Circular Economy Fortnight, Valbiom is inviting farmers, the press and designers to visit a 7.5-hectare textile hemp pilot plot in Awans, on Thursday June 1, from 9.30am to 12pm.

In 2022, the mechanization of hemp cultivation has made immense progress: 2.7 hectares of textile hemp could be harvested, turned, rolled and finally dyed. The operation went very well, thanks to the experience gained in 2021 and the regularity of the hemp bales. The textile sector is very interested in and in demand for this new ecological and local fiber. Wallonia is funding industrial-scale trials and has commissioned Valbiom to coordinate them.

During this visit, the Valbiom team will guide you through the plot, explaining the specific features of this crop and the current state of knowledge. Didactic panels will detail the different stages of cultivation and processing.
