Event details

The Public Service of Wallonia, supported by the European Union, aims to encourage start-ups and SMEs to find innovative solutions for plastics that align with the principles of the circular economy. The "Plastics Go Green and Circular" Challenge is an opportunity for you to contribute to a more circular and greener value chain!

The "Plastics Go Green and Circular" Challenge is organized in two phases:

  • Following a call for interest among a diverse group of stakeholders in Wallonia, ten 'challenges'—i.e., specific problems related to the circularity and sustainability of plastics for which no solution currently exists on the Walloon market—were selected by an independent jury.

  • A call for projects is now open to SMEs/start-ups to propose innovative solutions to these challenges. The selected companies will receive a €15,000 subsidy and tailored coaching to accelerate their innovation project.

The challenges range from selective collection and recycling of diapers to the development of a plastic made from agricultural waste streams. You can find a description of the 10 challenges here.

Do you have a solution in mind for one of the challenges and would like to discuss it with the challenge holder? Or perhaps you wish to test your idea with an expert in circular economy, plastics technology, or business casing? Sign up for a networking and co-creation workshop on September 22 (from 9 am to 12:30 pm) in Namur. Click here to register.

On the "Plastics Go Green and Circular" Challenge website, you will find the selection criteria, an inspiration guide, and a template (Circular Business Model Canvas) that can help you prepare your project proposal, as well as the online form to submit your project.

Several digital solutions can be mobilized to promote the circularity of plastics, particularly those that contribute to: • Improving design to optimize the use of plastics in products and facilitate plastic reuse and recycling; • Enhancing separate collection to enable high-quality recycling; • Smart return logistics (traceability, collection points, shared transport, etc.); • New business models (mainly combinations of products and services) to facilitate plastic reuse and recycling; • The use of key technologies that can help make the plastic value chain circular (IoT, blockchain, AI, VR, AR, big data, biotech, etc.).
