About
How can the environmental impact of cement manufacturers be reduced by locally producing clinkers and cement using secondary mineral materials?
The main challenge faced by Walloon cement producers today is to remain competitive against imported clinker while also meeting their commitments to reduce CO₂ emissions.
To address these challenges, the WASTES2CEM project will pursue two complementary approaches: first, partially replacing limestone in clinker raw meal with locally sourced secondary mineral materials; and second, reducing the clinker content in cement by adding reactive components derived from secondary mineral resources.
The two secondary mineral materials under study are different and will require mineral processing techniques to meet the technical specifications of the cement industry.
These materials currently represent a historic stockpile; repurposing them in cement manufacturing will also free up land for other uses (economic zones, housing, natural reserves…).
This project aims to :
Produce low-carbon cement
Free up land for other uses (economic development, housing, natural areas)
It is a project supported by the GREENWIN cluster, funded under the PNRR recovery plan.
