About
Founded in 2018 in Genval, aSmartWorld focuses on collecting, refurbishing, and reselling smartphones, thereby extending the lifespan of millions of devices that would otherwise lie forgotten in drawers. Estimates suggest that there may be up to 10 million unused smartphones in Belgium alone and around 700 million across Europe. With an average market value of around €150 per device, these forgotten phones represent both a substantial resource in terms of raw materials and a significant economic opportunity.
To fulfill its vision, aSmartWorld has created a comprehensive solution covering every step of the process: it retrieves old smartphones, tests them thoroughly, repairs them locally if needed, and then reintroduces them to the market. The company also introduced the ObyO app, which makes it much easier for users to monetize and dispose of their old devices. Through ObyO, consumers can instantly estimate their phone’s resale value, arrange shipping (often via DHL), or drop off the device at a partner location (such as Trafic stores). Once it arrives at aSmartWorld, the phone undergoes evaluation, is repaired if necessary, and ultimately put back into circulation.
This circular approach brings multiple benefits:
Reducing electronic waste: instead of throwing away functional devices, users help them find a new purpose.
Preserving resources: components such as metals, plastics, and glass are reused, delaying the need for extracting fresh raw materials.
Generating social and environmental impact: local services and increased awareness encourage responsible consumption and more thoughtful disposal practices.
Creating value: each refurbished device can earn its previous owner tens or even hundreds of euros while supporting a regional economic loop.
To motivate consumers further, aSmartWorld runs promotional initiatives throughout the year. During festive seasons, for example, the company partners with retailers or offers bonuses (such as a free Christmas sweater from Trafic) to encourage people to send in their old phones. Since the ObyO app was launched, several hundred smartphones have already been given a new life, contributing to a notable decrease in wastefulness and reducing the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing brand-new devices.
By offering a local and sustainable alternative in Belgium’s circular economy landscape, aSmartWorld demonstrates that economic viability and ecological responsibility can go hand in hand. With its user-friendly approach to selling and refurbishing unused smartphones, this Genval-based startup is paving the way for a more responsible and resource-efficient digital world.
