MIX-MATTERS

Project

Mix-Matters aims to convert mixed agri-food biowaste into high-value resources through an integrated system for separation and valorisation. This EU project supports greenhouse gas reduction and the development of new circular value chains.

About

Mix-Matters is an EU-funded Horizon Europe project addressing the challenge of valorising mixed agri-food biowaste, which is largely landfilled or incinerated, accounting for 3% of EU greenhouse gas emissions. The project introduces an integrated, modular, and automated system combining robotics and AI to efficiently separate waste streams and convert them into six high-value bio-based products: powdered ingredients, sugar concentrates, recombinant proteins, green fibers, bioactive compounds, and plastic monomers. The system is containerized for on-site processing, supported by a decision-support tool and digital product passports to ensure traceability. A 15-month demonstration across three sites will validate technical and economic feasibility, aiming to create 18 new value chains and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions.

The MixMatters consortium brings together 18 organizations from 8 European countries, including:
