Circular economy in Wallonia

Ecocim

Project

Ecocim introduces selective sorting in the cemeteries of our cities and villages by creating the first Walloon plant recycling center. They organize the collection of chrysanthemums (plants, pots, and plastics), cemetery by cemetery. The chrysanthemum is given a second life through circular economy practices. The result: a regional horticultural production that respects the environment.

    About

In each municipality with multiple cemeteries, each cemetery hosting hundreds of graves, often adorned with several chrysanthemums, the total adds up to several tons of chrysanthemums and waste. Faced with such quantities, waste containers are placed at cemetery entrances. Packaging plastics, pots, and plants coexist, ultimately ending up untreated in the regular municipal waste collection system.

Christophe Pépin and Kevin Ait Khalti's project aims to establish partnerships with 13 municipalities to organize the collection of these chrysanthemums, cemetery by cemetery, during the seasonal period around All Saints' Day.

    This includes:
    - Sorting, pruning, and reconditioning for winter storage.
    - Storage in cold greenhouses is then carried out.

The objective is to move chrysanthemums away from ephemeral use, thereby:
    • Reducing waste through circular economy practices.
    • Establishing local partnerships with participating municipalities.
    • Introducing selective sorting in cemeteries by recovering pots and reconditioned perennial plants instead of needlessly discarding them.
    • Offering environmentally friendly local horticultural production.
With the guidance of the Walloon Center for Agronomic Research (CWR-A).
