About

The CirculaTex project, initiated by Centexbel, seeks to reduce the textile industry’s carbon footprint by promoting circular economy approaches. At the core of this effort are multiple strategic actions designed to enhance both the sustainability and competitiveness of the sector. First, the project emphasizes eco-design, a principle that involves rethinking textile creation to minimize environmental impacts throughout the product life cycle. This includes assessing fibers, production processes, and chemical usage in order to identify improvements.

Moreover, CirculaTex focuses on recycling and reuse of raw materials. Post-consumer waste (worn-out garments, household textiles) and post-production leftovers (fabric scraps, surplus) are collected, sorted, and transformed into new products. These recycling activities require tailored technologies capable of handling various fiber types (natural, synthetic, blended) and generating high-quality secondary raw materials.

In parallel, the project encourages the development of new business models centered on extending the lifespan of textiles, such as renting or exchanging garments and offering repair services. Centexbel fosters collaboration among businesses, research centers, and public institutions, thus creating a network of stakeholders committed to reforming the Belgian and European textile industry.

Beyond the technical aspects, CirculaTex addresses training and awareness needs. Participating enterprises are urged to integrate circular practices within their value chains, while communication efforts target consumers to highlight the importance of responsible purchasing behaviors. Ultimately, the aim is to establish a more resilient textile ecosystem, drastically cutting CO₂ emissions and the reliance on virgin resources, all while generating local economic and social benefits.

This project showcases the ambition to transform the textile industry toward greener, more innovative models. By leveraging research, technological advances, and broad collaboration, CirculaTex aspires to prove that the circular transition is not only feasible but also a source of added value. The expected outcomes include a tangible reduction in the industry’s environmental footprint, improved competitiveness for textile businesses, and, ultimately, a significant contribution to combating climate change.
