Anthemis

Project

Anthemis by Heidelberg Materials in Antoing will capture 800,000 t of CO₂ annually from 2029 using hybrid oxyfuel-amine technology. Goal: deliver 15 Mt of net-zero cement over 10 years, supported by a full CCS chain for capture, transport (via Zeebrugge), and storage under the North Sea.

About

The Anthemis project, led by Heidelberg Materials in Antoing, is a cornerstone of Wallonia’s industrial decarbonisation strategy, as cement accounts for 40% of regional industrial emissions. Starting in 2029, an innovative hybrid carbon capture unit combining oxyfuel and amine technologies will capture over 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, reducing site emissions by 97%. This breakthrough will enable the production of net-zero cement, with more than 15 million tonnes delivered over the first decade.
Anthemis is part of a complete CCS value chain: on-site capture, transport via Zeebrugge, and permanent storage under the North Sea, in partnership with Fluxys and Equinor. Supported by the EU Innovation Fund, this project is vital for meeting EU and Walloon climate targets while ensuring long-term competitiveness and safeguarding local jobs.
